Research Interests:

  • The social context of raw material acquisition in Egypt: post-doctoral research is to further develop the application of cross-cultural and cross-level conceptual models in social archaeology to production data in second millennium BC quarry and mining sites in Egypt.
  • Logistics of ancient stone quarrying in Egypt, 3 rd – 2 nd millennium BC
  • Gemstone and copper mining in ancient Egypt
  • Conservation of ancient quarry landscapes
  • Fieldwork also covers a range of quarry sites in Norway, Turkey and Jordan

  • Current fieldwork project: archaeological and geological survey of the west bank silicified sandstone quarries at Gebel Gulab, Aswan, Egypt
  • ‘QuarryScapes: conservation of ancient stone quarry landscapes in the Eastern Mediterranean’ – project designer with Tom Heldal and Per Storemyr of The Geological Survey of Norway. An EU 6 th Framework funded multi-disciplinary collaborative project commencing November 2005 for three years in Turkey, Egypt and Jordan
  • A rchaeological and geological survey of the Widan el-Faras basalt quarries – March/April 2006
